When COVID-19 was declared a public health emergency in January 2020, people who were enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) were automatically renewed each year for benefits without having to go through an eligibility review.
The public health emergency rule was lifted in May 2023, leaving between 550,000 to 700,000 people in Texas at risk of losing Medicaid coverage during the redetermination period.
