Discuss the country-code top level domains or ccTLDs
-
What are some of the reasons they were created? What advantages do they offer to a website?
Originally, ccTLDs were used by university science departments because they were handed out to the first person who asked for them. TLDs can give the user an inherit trust that they are in a reputable site--that site that they choose is also housed within the country they intend to search within. However, these rules have become more and more loose so, it may not be as relevent as it used to be.

Discuss the new (newer) generic top level domains or gTLDs
-
What makes them unique?
They must consist of 3 or more characters.
-
What was the purpose for changing the format of tlds to the new format?
gTLD This was one of the original requests of The Green Paper, and when ICANN was formed after the White Paper, it focused on gTDLs. In 2011 ICANN lifted the restrictions on new gTLDs because "innovation should be allowed to run free."
-
How much did it cost to sponsor one of the new gTLDs?
$185,000
-
How well are they selling?
Very well, with financial companies most apt to buy them. Then again they are also expensive so maybe they are just the more likely ones to afford them.
-
What do you see for the future of these top level domain names?
We will probably see more and more of them, which will make knowing someones internet address harder and harder to memorize or verbally say. I think of it as how now we have to know peoples area codes in addition to the other 7 numbers of thier phone number, where growing up I only had to know the last four. Having to memorize all 9 digits means I have less of them logged in my brain.
